"Business leaders and policy makers, noting that teamwork is more important in today’s workplace than ever before, have encouraged schools to put more emphasis on collaboration to help prepare students for their future jobs." (Resnick, 4)
I completely agree with this quote from the author. I was not involved in many structured group projects until I was in college. This is completely different than how the professional world works. All major projects completed professionally are done in teams to ensure that work is divided up, quality is assured by other team members and management reviews of the work and accountability does not rest on individual team members that are subject to promotions, transfers, lay-offs and illness.
I did a website search on education teamwork and found this interesting site with teamwork quotes: http://quotations.about.com/cs/inspirationquotes/a/Teamwork1.htm
Enjoy!

I also completely agree with the quote you chose. I actually did my action research on collaborative learning and still have my class arranged to encourage it. In the workplace you are encouraged to use your resources and that’s what I am trying (somewhat successfully) to get my students to learn. Your weaknesses are someone else’s strengths and vice versa.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your resources. I have bookmarked it and intend to use some of them in my class; I try to put a different quote on the board every week. Thanks for sharing!
I agree with your quote as well. In fact, I teach a group lesson about the 21st Century workplace, and we talk a lot about how teamwork and collaboration are so, so important to today's jobs. I did found it unexpected that Henry Ford was quoted in your additional resource. I guess I always thought about him as someone who just created the assembly-line, factory, cookie-cutter worker. Although I did know he paid his employees well, and I always admired that. This quote made me want to do more research about him.
ReplyDeleteCollaboration and teamwork are crucial in a real world environment. Collaboration is a 21st Century Skill. I often tell student employee at the Folklife Center, that they are learning to work as part of a team and how to engage the strengths and weaknesses of each other in accomplishing a common goal. They tell me that we should all go on Survivor!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that you bring up Survivor. The best reality show to demonstrate what the 21st century world of work looks like is The Apprentice! I can't stand Donald Trump. Even so, it is great example of what learning should look like if schools what to prepare young people for the 21st century world of work. Interestingly, I think The Apprentice does a great job of applying the principles of good games for learning!
